Catalog insanity

19 Nov

I think they’re onto us…the catalog companies have recognized that we actually buy things from them. And they’re telling their friends. Because we are getting about 10 catalogs a day. That’s right, a big, huge stack of Christmas catalogs every day.

But, truth be told, I kinda like getting them. I don’t have the time to window shop anymore nor do I have any inclination to subscribe to another magazine. So catalogs are the only way that I discover new trends and products. Okay, it’s really catalogs and design blogs. Well, and Northwestern undergrads too (they’re so trendy, those kids).

For example, we recently received a catalog from Zingerman’s, an Ann Arbor, MI institution. This place is (apparently) legendary, although we’ve never been there before. And their catalog is amazing. They sell all kinds of baked goods, meats, cheeses, olive oils, seriously everything. And it all sounds delicious. Their Christmas Brunch Box has almost all of my favorite foods in there- scones, bread, bacon, coffee, cheese, pancakes. They also have a clever monthly food club, The Forbidden Foods Club, with themes like Anaphylactic Armageddon (peanut-y foods) and Hypertensive Episode (sea salt-based foods). How clever! We must visit this place!

So, I guess I’m the reason that companies continue to send out old-fashioned paper mailers in this internet-driven age. Because while part of me wishes that catalog companies would save the trees and reduce their paper use, the other part is glad that I get little moments of enjoyment in the mail everyday. Oh, those catalog companies are so sneaky!
