Work vs. life: poem

29 Nov

A lot has been said about the struggle to balance work and home life, in particular about juggling the demands of parenthood. Great examples of writing on this topic can be found all over the blogging world  (I particularly like Her Bad Mother and Finslippy).  But with so much wonderful, funny, heartfelt, thought-provoking content out there, I find that I don’t have volumes to add on this subject. My struggles are the same as everyone else’s.

So, rather than go on at length about my current work-life battles, I thought that I would express my thoughts in haiku. It’ll be more efficient. Less tiresome. This will force me to be brief. It’s only 17 syllables.

Okay, this should be interesting. I haven’t done this since the fifth grade. Oh geez, here it goes:

On one hand, success.

On the other, family.

How do I rate them?

My head might explode.

Balancing my work and home.

Too much on my plate.

That wasn’t a super fun topic but at least it was over quickly.

Okey-doke, moving on to a lighter note, I was inspired by a post on Simple Kids about a new gift giving philosophy. Buy kids something they want, something they need, something they wear, something they read. This philosophy probably doesn’t work forever (younger Rebecca would have had nothing to do with this) but it sounds like a good idea for very little ones. So in the next few days, I’ll put up Henry’s Christmas list, following this format. Who knows, maybe I’ll put up something for me and Deron too.

Day 17 complete. 13 days to go.

Thursday?! Really?!

15 Sep

How is it already Thursday?! Jeepers.

Science Club starts again next week and I have been up to my eyeballs in work. Orientation last Saturday. Open House Tuesday night. Three hours spent assigning 40 kids to small groups. Hundreds…no thousands…no millions (okay maybe just many dozens) of emails in and out. Everything is (thankfully) coming together but it’s been a whirlwind of activity.

In my absence, Deron has taken over photographer duties and he’s done a fine job. Our awesome new camera, a Nikon D3100 (thanks Mom and Dad!) makes things so easy. Check out his handiwork:

I think Deron’s quite good at this, don’t you agree?

Of course, it’s hard to take a bad picture of Henry boy.
